Crabby

That’s how I felt tonight, well honestly how I’ve been feeling a lot this week. Anyway with some of the things I ‘had’ to do out of the way, I decided to take the night off and do some sewing. I tried to continue some of the applique work but my concentration levels were just not high enough. I then decided that I wanted to make a soft toy lorikeet (random thought) and after drawing up a pattern, I realised I didn’t have any bright green or yellow fleece. So I decided to make a crab since I had red fleece.

Here is the final result.

He is pretty rushed as tonight I didn’t focus on quality but just wanted to create.
I made up the pattern and went for it. Those little feet take forever to turn the right way around!

Andrew likes his new crab and I’m happy I got to spend a few hours being creative.

New pants

I’m very proud of my latest effort. I made these pair of denim pants last night for my godson Sammy. The cotton has little bees over it.

I altered the pattern to add the pretty hems and cute pockets. There are a few small mistakes, but overall I’m pretty happy with the effort.

Sammy’s stash is growing

… unfortunately a lot slower than he is, however once we get a design right the rest should follow quicker.

This afternoon, I went to visit mum to make nappy 5 and 6.

We are still working on the pattern changes especially as sammy has grown a lot. We included the gusset design that we worked with on the last nappy.

Besides adding an extra leak barrier, the gussets nicely hold a soaker pad in. The nappy on the left has the soaker in. I was pretty happy with my new sewing machine. I brought some bamboo and fleece home to make the soaker. It overlocked stitched 3 bamboo layers and a fleece layer without a hitch. I might try more later.

Charlie bear is way too small to show the nappy off but Sammy couldn’t come visit :(

Throughout the week, I made another sleeping bag. I hate zips and would be happy never to make anything with one again! However my bias tape skills are getting better and I’m pretty proud of how even the edges are.

Second and Third outfit

I’ve spent many hours over the last week making a couple of pinafores for my two neices. Firstly I made the pattern out of some really cheap green poly cotton and then made the two dresses.

All the seams of the dresses have an overlocked stitched edge to prevent fraying. Oddly the straps took me the longest time, especially since I had to unpick 7 of the 8 cause I sewed the wrong sides together (late nights aren’t the best for thinking)

The pattern has pants to go with the dresses. Unfortunately I only had time to finish one of the pants.

To add to the dresses, last night I also made a few hankerchiefs for my father in law. They are great practice for sewing tight clean and straight seams.

Overall I’m pretty proud of my effort. While if you look closely there are some stitching mistakes, the dresses and pants hang correctly and evenly. I’m learning pretty quickly and having a lot of fun along the way.

I’m also developing a new habit of picking up outfits andrew and I have and analysing how they are constructed.

Going Solo – My first ever outfit

I bought my own sewing machine last week and this is my first ever outfit made all by myself. It is a sleeping bag for Sammy. The bias tape and zipper were a bit of a challenge for a newbie but I’m pretty proud of my effort. It all lines up and sits correctly just don’t look to closely at the stitching in some parts 😉
