Teddy bear weekend

I felt like doing some applique this weekend and wanted to create something semi christmassy but also could be used all year round. Introducing my first nappy and singlet set…
Teddies incorportated.

The cutest thing about the nappy is something you can’t see.
The nappy jingles!
I sewed tiny bells into the top elastic casing and yes made very very sure that with wear and tear they wouldn’t escape and cause a chocking hazard.

The plain singlet was bought, but the teddies and nappy are made from scratch. I’m getting a lot more control over what I’m stitching now.

new nappies

I’ve been busy all afternoon and having a great time. These are today’s creations

I’ve been teaching myself how to applique. The crab was my own creation, the sheep came from the fabric I made sammy’s original sleep suit out of.

All but the denim nappy have gussets and take 8 layers of bamboo. 4 in the inside and 4 in the pocket. I was impressed my sewing machine easily made it through the 4 layers of bamboo with a layer of fleece on top.

Sammy’s stash is growing

… unfortunately a lot slower than he is, however once we get a design right the rest should follow quicker.

This afternoon, I went to visit mum to make nappy 5 and 6.

We are still working on the pattern changes especially as sammy has grown a lot. We included the gusset design that we worked with on the last nappy.

Besides adding an extra leak barrier, the gussets nicely hold a soaker pad in. The nappy on the left has the soaker in. I was pretty happy with my new sewing machine. I brought some bamboo and fleece home to make the soaker. It overlocked stitched 3 bamboo layers and a fleece layer without a hitch. I might try more later.

Charlie bear is way too small to show the nappy off but Sammy couldn’t come visit :(

Throughout the week, I made another sleeping bag. I hate zips and would be happy never to make anything with one again! However my bias tape skills are getting better and I’m pretty proud of how even the edges are.

Nappy with gussets

Mum and I had another sewing day today. Our challenge today was to make a nappy with gussets. After combining the wee weka pocket pattern with a few of our ideas and a few online tutorials… this is the result…

The gussets add an extra line of defence against leaking as there are two lines of elastic. It is hard to see in the photo but there is the normal elastic on the leg along with gusset. A booster can sit in between the gussets to either replace the stuffing in the pocket or be combined with the stuffing in the pocket for more absorbancy.

Unfortunately the next photo is a bit blury and the only one I have of the side. If you focus you can see the outer edge along with the inner gusset.

And a photo of the nappy on my adorable godson.

When I get back from webdu, I will post the steps we went through.
